In my future game, I pull from a LOT of sources as differing backdrops.
Starflight II, Star Wars, Star Trek, Wing Commander, Aliens, Predator, Starcraft, Darwin's World, the old I.C.E. Space Master setting, Battletech... pretty much anything Sci-Fi or that can be tweaked to BE Sci-Fi is fair game to me.
I don't see any reason why space miners and a space mining operation wouldn't be a viable backdrop.
For my own usage, though, I'd probably make it a defunct ancient mining operation constantly on the move... like with an automated foundry, and factory that automatically creates the smelting engines that keep the ores liquified... Perhaps the space foundry moves through space searching for more sources, and is heading toward a populated system...
Finding such a thing and backtracking it could set PCs up to be very rich (or NPCs HAVE found it, and used it to become very rich, and now want to employ the PCs to find a way to divert the machine without destroying it)...
Lots of possibilities.

We'd be fighting 2nd tier Goa'Ulds, too... While we wouldn't have the glory of killing Amon Ra the ruler of a thousand worlds and terror of the System Lords, we WOULD get to fight his younger brother... Bubba Ray. Manager of the Ra-Mart, and terror of those who abuse the quarter fed riding Unas out front of the store.
