A D20 Modern game that could potentially go anywhere?
FX. Possibly one higher progress level than our own for particularly enterprising Smart Heroes, or if it goes in a direction that would call for it.

Or...

Americanarchy.
Using D20 Modern and Year of the Zombie.
Zombie Apocalypse, Red Dawn.... Terminator? Who knows what else?

Or...

Stargate universe
D20 Modern, D20 Future, house rules.

Or...

D20 Future.
This could go ANYWHERE.
Star Frontiers. Space Master. Battletech. Dr. Who. Battlestar Galactica. Starship Troopers. Starcraft. Stargate. Star Wars. Star Trek. Wing Commander... You name a Sci-Fi story with which I'm familiar, and it's fair game.

I'm willing to run up to 3 games in PbP if there is sufficient interest.

Yup. Core D20 Modern would definitely make up the vast bulk of the ruleset.

Most of the houserules will deal with the tech, and racial stuff with the aliens.

I would also end up using some stuff from Blood and Guts (military rank and equipment type stuff, though for individuals gaming, I've never been a huge fan of the BUCS system in B&G, so that wouldn't be used), and Blood and Fists if someone wants to run a Martial Arts focused character.
Mostly it'd be a few details that would vary from Core D20 Modern (and the WotC modern series of books).
Oh... and my autofire rules.
